ABOUT

For this project, I created a package of design materials intended for promoting a festival event called Fork Fest in Utah. The event lasted for two days in 2023 and included many bands and artists playing at different times on different stages. The task involved recreating a branding design for an existing event and reappropriating elements into different promotional formats, such as posters, flyers and social media thumbnails. Ultimately I was able to play around with layout and branding design to create a handful of visually engaging materials to be used in promoting an event.

PLANNING

I began by researching Fork Fest to better understand their brand personality and feel so that I could create materials that were true to the event’s integrity. I first came across the 2023 poster for the event but also perused their Instagram page and their website.

I also researched other festival event posters and focused in specifically on ones that were similar to my understanding of Fork Fest’s look and feel. The festival took place in Utah, in the desert, so I wanted to highlight the nature and outdoors aspect of it, so I wanted to look at how other posters used these themes as well as colors.

DESIGN

I jumped right in with the design and began building up the all-inclusive poster because I thought it was the most important promotional material. Using the ideas that I had gathered from my research, I decided to implement a large moon in the background as I had seen many posters do, but I pivoted from Fork Fest’s existing design. Their 2023 poster was dark, electric and angular - but I wanted my design to feel more organic and bold. I settled on a smaller color palette and made the shapes more loose, outlining them with a brush texture to accentuate the effect.

I then altered the poster design slightly to create a flyer as well as a printed VIP invitation for the event. For the flyer, I minimized the information that I had included on the original poster and only included the information that I thought would be the most relevant and attention grabbing, such as what to expect at the event, the headliners and where to buy tickets.

The next stage of promotional materials involved social media posts and images to be distributed across Facebook and Instagram. For Facebook, I created a header for Fork Fest’s page as well as three livestream event thumbnails for some of the festival performances. For Instagram, I was able to exercise the most creativity so far and really repurpose all of the design elements I had come up with into differently formatted posts.
